TOEFL Test Preparation

Participating TOEFL test ( The Test Of English as a Foreign Language)  is not sufficient only armed with technical knowledge about the listening, structure, and reading it. Many non- technical terms also need to be considered so as not to disrupt, disperse the concentration or even be the cause of test failure. Therefore, I will explain and discuss the strategies and techniques to prepare TOEFL test. These tips should only be used as an additional mechanism for preparing to take the TOEFL and get the best score. Students should also practice speaking, listening, and reading. First time the TOEFL test was introduced by the ETS (Educational Testing Services) in New Jersey, USA since 1963, At that time TOEFL test was the Paper Based Test ( PBT ). 


 Here are the best strategies you should do for TOEFL test preparation as follows: 
  1. More practice and the better you can get after you study from reading, grammar material sources. 
  2. Don't spend too much time to answer on any one question. You should start only seconds on the easiest questions and continue to difficult things. 
  3. Learn the direction of TOEFL test before you start to answer the questions.
  4. Don't forget to bring watch to test room.
  5. Answer all question on the paper base, 
  6. Use the process of elimination to choose which answers are wrong or correct. 
  7. Try to answer correct prediction if you have to do. Just try to eliminate one or more choices before guessing. 
  8. Studying TOEFL is enjoyable, Do not think that TOEFL test is burden for you. make it as your friendly partner. 

The more specific test strategies  you can do such as: 

1. Reading Comprehensions 


1. Do not be too long to read a text passage.
2. Notice all the questions in a reading and remember the key word.
3. Do not be panic if the theme of reading is not a discipline that is acquainted with you.
4. Do previewing to know the topic of reading.
5. Note the first sentence of a paragraph reading to find out the main idea.
6. Understand the context contained in the readings to know the meaning of certain words.
7. Perform scanning to find specific information relating to the matter of the request.
8. Gather facts and data in the literature to perform inference.
9. Concentrate during the reading text passages.
10. Increase your reading speed.

2.   Listening Comprehensions 

1. Understand the form commands ( direction) on each part carefully before test.
2. Read the options on each question as much as possible when the narrator was reading direction and example problems (example ).
3. Listen with full concentration and focus on your attention to the conversation you are listening to.
4. Maximize your listening skills on the first questions in each part.

Part A: Short conversations
A. Focus on your hearing on the second speaker.
B. Do not be panic if you can not understand words in the conversation completely. You only need to capture the main idea or content of the conversation.
C. If you simply can not understand what was being said second speaker, choose the answer that is most different from what you hear.
D. Understand forms of functional expression of agreement, uncertainty, suggestion, surprise, idiomatic, and the situation when the talks conducted.

Part B: longer conversation
A. When the narrator reads in Part B direction you should read the answer choices at a once and then record it and try to predict theme of what would be a conversation.
B. When listening to conversations, you must know what the theme / topic.
C. Beware of each question.
D. Pay attention to the conditions and situations that occur during a conversation, the conversation about where and when, what and who's talking about.

Part C: talks
A. If you have time, look at the options listed on sheet answers and find the key word.
B. Beware of talks in the first sentence because it usually will be the topic for the next sentences.
C. Focus on your hearing on matters related to 5- W questions ( what, who, when, where, why ) and How.
D. Draw conclusions over the situation that occurs when the talks conducted.
